It took her two hours, sitting at the kitchen table after Daniel and the kids were asleep, to go back through six months of statements.

What she found wasn’t one hotel. It was seven — always the same one, a Best Western off Route 12, always on nights he’d told her he was working late or traveling for a “regional meeting.”

She cross-referenced the dates against his work calendar, which he’d once shared with her for scheduling pickups. Three of the “meetings” didn’t exist on the calendar at all.

So instead, she did something she’d never done in eleven years of marriage. She quietly signed up for a $12 people-search site, typed in a name she’d seen once on his phone screen months earlier and dismissed as a work contact — Melissa R. — and hit search.

A LinkedIn profile came up first. Then a Facebook profile. Then, three results down, something she wasn’t expecting at all.
