PAGE 5 of 7 — “Talking to Someone Who Knew”

Sarah didn’t want to ambush Daniel with accusations she couldn’t fully back up. She wanted the truth first, from someone outside the marriage.

She reached out to an old coworker of Daniel’s, someone who’d left the company but stayed friendly on Facebook — a woman named Priya who Sarah had always gotten along with at company events.

She kept the message light: “Random question — were you at the Chicago conference back in March? Trying to remember who all went.”

Priya’s reply took two days to come. When it did, it wasn’t what Sarah expected.

“I was there. Can I be honest with you? I’ve wanted to say something for a while but it wasn’t my place. Can we talk on the phone?”

They spoke that evening while Sarah sat in her car in the school pickup line, the engine running.

Priya was careful with her words, clearly uncomfortable, but she confirmed what Sarah already suspected — Daniel and Melissa had been “close” at that conference, close enough that people on the trip had noticed and quietly talked about it. Priya said she’d assumed Sarah already knew, or that it wasn’t Priya’s business to bring up.

“I’m sorry,” Priya said. “I should’ve said something sooner.”

Sarah thanked her, hung up, and sat in the parked car for ten full minutes before she trusted herself to drive.

She had her answer. Now she had to decide what to do with it — and how to make sure Daniel couldn’t talk his way out of this one.
